Paul Brower, Jacob's father, had stayed with the rest of the family, so that a man was traveling with them as they completed the journey. First the family was navigated by Indians in canoes on Lake Winnebago to Fond du Lac. In Fond du Lac they met the first settler of that area, Edman Pren, who conveyed them in a wagon to their new home at Fox Lake. The members of the Brower family arriving at Fox Lake were Paul, Rachel, Martha Mackie Brower (wife of Jacob), children Euphemia, Emily, Amelis, Thomas and Catherine (the domestic that they brought with them). That made for 11 persons sharing one log cabin, constructed by Jacob P. and the boys. Their household goods were shipped from Green Bay, up the Fox River to Fort Winnebago (Portage) on a flat boat. Then over land to Fox Lake by carts and oxen, making for a slow journey where there were no roads, just paths.
At the land office in Green Bay he found out that Henry Merrill already had a claim on the land, but the two made an agreement that Jacob could build a cabin on land owned by Henry. Jacob then headed back to the state of New York.
Jacob really wanted to settle his own land, but the area west and south of Fox Lake had not be surveyed in early 1838. The land could not be sold until it was, but by fall of 1838 the survey of Indian Territory had been completed around Fox Lake. Jacob entered his own claim in October of 1838. He then proceeded to build a new two story log cabin on the west side of Mill Creek for the family of 11. In those early days, if you wanted a certain tract of government land, you journeyed to the land office at Nike Air Max 2016 Rcr Green Bay and paid the required fee. If several persons wanted the same piece, it went to the one who could "win the race" to Green Bay. At the time that Jacob P. Brower moved the family to the west side of Mill Creek, there were 18 whites in Dodge County, and 11 of them were the Brower group.
It is an interesting story that actually begins with Jacob's father, Paul Brower. Paul owned an island in Lake Ontario where he was an extensive stock farmer. Artillery and in Captain John I. Suffern's Company. Paul was born in Rockland County, New York and was of Holland decent. He had married Rachel and they had one son, Jacob P. Brower. In the years of 1834 and 1835, Paul and Jacob had very unsuccessful years as stock farmers and the decision was made to make a new start in the Midwest.
Bay). This first trip was rather eventful, as 18 miles out of Fort Winnebago his horse was stolen by Indians and he had to return to the Fort by foot. He set out again for Fort Howard to register a claim but branched off on an Indian Trail south of Markesan. That Indian trail took him 10 miles to a Winnebago Indian Village on the north shore of Fox Lake. Jacob thought it was a beautiful area, with picturesque shores, oak openings and rich loamy soil. He decided to continue to Fort Howard, where he hoped to file a claim on the land.
in peace with the whites.
Dodge County's first settler in Fox Lake
By Julie FlemmingJacob P. Brower was the first settler of Dodge County. He came and brought his family to Fox Lake in 1838, making the Browers the first full and complete family in Dodge County, and in fact, the only family that had reached the area in the early spring of 1838.
In 1838, Jacob P. Brower came back to Fox Lake and brought his two sons, George Washington Brower and John LaFayette Brower. They came by ox team in a covered wagon from Sheboygan, following Indian Trails until they reached the land of Sec. 14, R. 13 N, Range 13 E.
Jacob was a man of small stature and very active and industrious. He had a prominent Roman nose, deep blue eyes, very high forehead and a lot of light auburn hair. He was a trained surveyor and he had seen and admired the Fox Lake area back in the summer of 1836. That summer he made a trip on horseback from Madison to Fort Winnebago (Portage) and on to Fort Howard (later to be called Green Nike Air Max Youth

coming to Fox Lake, his son George (called Washington) was 17 years old and John (called LaFayette) was 14 years old. It was their job to construct a cabin for the rest of the family that was following behind.
There were between 100 and 500 Native Americans on the land that Jacob claimed at the Green Bay office. When he and his two sons arrived in the area, they were very pleased with the friendliness of the Indians located near Stoddart Spring. No doubt the friendliness was because Solomon Juneau (a fur trader) had warned them to be friendly when the white man began to pour in or face extermination. He had called a council of the Indians in 1837 at the Indian Village of Maunkshakkak, later known Horicon. He told them that whites would be soon arriving by the hundreds and their only hope of escaping extermination was to cooperate and try to live Nike Air Max 2016 Black Orange
